SUN DAMAGE

Learn your treatment options.

Treatment options depend on the elements of sun damage that are most prominent.

OVERVIEW

Chronic exposure to the sun or UV light causes changes in the skin.  You already recognize these changes.  Think about the skin on a baby – it is smooth, uniform in color without brown spots or redness.  Now think about the skin of someone who spends a lot of time outdoors – sun-damaged skin has reddish undertones, is discolored with brown or white spots, is wrinkled, thinner, and less supple.

Element of sun damage

  • Sunspots (lentigines): Sunspots, also called liver spots or lentigines, are common. They generally appear on areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun over time, like the hands, shoulders and the face.
  • Underlying redness and more prominent blood vessels: Chronically damaged skin is thinner and tends to have a reddish undertone.
  • Actinic keratoses: Actinic keratoses are scaly spots that typically present on people with lighter skin who have had sun damage.
  • Thinner, wrinkled, fragile skin: As the sun thins the skin, it more easily wrinkles with movement and shows etched-in lines.  In addition, thin skin is more likely to bruise with slight trauma.

PREVENTION

Make a habit of following these three steps to prevent sun damage:

  1. Stay out of the sun and tanning beds, especially during mid-day hours
  2. Cover your skin by using broad-brimmed hats, sunglasses, long sleeves and long pants
  3. Apply sunscreen on exposed skin regularly and generously

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment programs depend on the elements of sun damage that are most prominent.

  • Topical treatment – Topical regimens often include good sunscreen, retinoids, and brightening agents, such as hydroquinone and kojic acid.
  • Chemical Peels – a series of superficial peels exfoliate the skin, treating fine lines and pigmentation issues.
  • Photofacial / Intense Pulsed Light – a series of IPL treatments is very effective for treating reds and browns, with minimal downtime
