Your Body Lift: Say Goodbye to Excess Skin

If you have had a major weight loss, you might have a large amount of excess skin that can mask the great strides you have made in your appearance. Body lift procedures can further slenderize your new body by removing that excess skin.

The body lift procedure Dr. Cho performs is also known as a belt lipectomy and is an extensive surgery used to remove excess skin from the upper or lower body. This procedure will leave you feeling more confident and comfortable with your body, especially if it has undergone changes due to an event like pregnancy or massive weight loss. Contact us today to schedule your consultation and learn more about proceeding with a body lift in Spring, TX.

Your Body Lift Consultation

Dr. Cho will have a one-on-one consultation with you to determine if you are a good candidate for a body lift, giving both of you the opportunity to get to know each other as Dr. Cho learns about your goals and lifestyle.

You may be an ideal patient for a body lift if you have excess skin on your thighs, buttocks, hips, and/or abdomen and experience discomfort and hygiene issues related to skin folds. The body lift procedure Dr. Cho performs is also known as a belt lipectomy.

Complementary Procedures to Pair With Your Body Lift

A body lift can remove excess skin on your thighs, buttocks, and hips, as well as your abdomen. Liposuction may be performed at the same time.  Some patients will opt to add contouring of their arms, inner thighs, or breasts, although staging these procedures may be wise to reduce the intensity of recovery and the overall stress on the body.

Why Our Patients Love the Body Lift

  • After massive weight loss, a surgical body lift may be the only way to remove a significant amount of loose skin.
  • Your clothing will fit better once the excess skin is removed.
  • Many people consider a body lift the last step in a long weight loss journey.

What to Expect During a Body Lift Procedure

A body lift is an extensive surgery used to remove excess skin from the lower body. It is often performed on individuals who have lost a massive amount of weight, which may be 50 percent of their starting body weight. Dr. Cho will mark the incision points on your body, and you will be placed under general anesthesia. The procedure can last anywhere from three to five hours.

The incisions made during the body lift are placed in the natural folds of the skin or hidden beneath the underwear border where they will be less visible and hidden, if possible. The surgery may be done in stages based on your individual needs. After the incisions have been made, the excess skin is lifted and removed.

Recovery After Your Body Lift

Following your surgery, you should expect to be on bed rest for about one day, but you may walk with assistance the following day. Your initial recovery immediately after your procedure could take a few hours or up to two days, depending on the extent of your procedure and how long you need to be monitored by medical staff. You should plan to have someone take you home after the surgery and stay with you for the first few days after your procedure.

The total recovery time following a body lift can last up to six weeks, and you will wear a compression garment during that time. Dr. Cho may place drains following your surgery to collect any fluids and decrease swelling, which increases the potential for infection. The drains are usually removed after one to two weeks. You may be able to resume strenuous activities around six to eight weeks after the operation, although you are likely to have swelling for six months or even more. You will schedule follow-up appointments to visit Dr. Cho, who will determine when it is safe for you to become more active.

Do you offer any alternative procedures?

A panniculectomy can remove the "apron" of loose skin and fat that hangs down from the stomach, while a mini tummy tuck also addresses sagging skin in your lower belly and will result in less scarring than a full tummy tuck. A bra-line backlift or upper back lift can be combined with an abdominoplasty to achieve skin-tightening results.

If you have acceptable skin quality, you can consider non-surgical skin tightening treatments such as BodyTite, Sofwave, or Profound RF. These procedures are not intended to address excessive skin laxity.

What else do I need to know?

  • The recovery can be a month or more.
  • You might not be a candidate for a body lift if you have a serious medical condition.
  • You will have permanent scars, although they will fade over time.
  • There is a risk of complications.

Are there any risks involved?

Risks for a body lift are similar to the risks of most surgeries. A lower body lift is a major operation, and it is possible to develop an infection, pain, and significant swelling. You may also develop blood clots, but compression garments and light exercise can minimize the risk. In rare cases, you may develop serious issues with your heart or lungs.
