Address the Presence of Saggy Breasts

As you age, you may notice that your breasts are beginning to sag. When your breasts sag, the nipples droop and areola can stretch. Your breasts may sag as the result of genetics or gravity. Degrading structural breast tissue that occurs as the result of aging can also cause saggy breasts. A breast lift procedure, technically called a mastopexy, is very common. There are several techniques that can address sagging and restore the contour and projection of your breasts for a more youthful look, both surgical and nonsurgical.

Women who are pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant as well as those who are currently breastfeeding are not good candidates for a breast lift.

Breast lift surgery, often performed along with a breast augmentation, removes excess breast tissue and skin, and shifts the areola and nipple into a higher position. Dr. Cho at Integrated Aesthetics will meet with you privately to discuss the best treatment for your situation.

Causes of Breast Sagging

Your breasts may sag as structural breast tissue degrades and as a result of gravity. Genetics plays a huge role in the size and shape of your breasts. Pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as weight loss can also have an impact.

Preventing Sagging Breasts

There is nothing you can do about genetics, aging and gravity, but there are some healthy lifestyle habits you can follow to try to keep your breasts youthful for as long as possible. There is no muscle in your breasts, but they sit on top of the pectoral muscle. Exercises that strengthen the pectoral muscle along with back, shoulder and core muscles can improve your posture and tone, and may help reduce the appearance of sagging breasts. Exercise can also help you avoid weight changes that can affect your breasts.

A healthy diet can help keep your skin supple and reduce wrinkles and sag. UV Rays of this sun can breakdown your skin's elasticity, so limit your sun exposure. Smoking causes the collagen in your skin to break down, promoting saggy breasts.

Treatment Options for Sagging Breasts

If you are not ready for a surgical breast lift to address your saggy breasts, you can try a noninvasive radiofrequency assisted breast lift. This nonsurgical breast lift procedure can improve the overall appearance of your breast and stimulate the production of collagen for overall lifting and firming.

A surgical breast lift removes excess breast tissue and skin. The areola and nipple are moved to a higher position. Dr. Cho will Select the right surgical breast lift technique that fits your needs.

  • The Half Moon Lift: The half-moon or crescent technique is commonly performed with breast augmentation. The incision is made around the top of the areola giving a lifting effect.
  • The Donut Lift: If you need a minor to moderate breast lift, Dr. Cho may recommend the donut or periareolar incision. The donut incision is made around the areola and the nipple is repositioned when excess tissue is removed.
  • The Lollipop Lift: The vertical or lollipop lift is used to address moderate sagging and breast shape concerns. The donut incision which is made around the areola is combined with an additional incision from the areola to the breast fold to remove tissue and skin.
  • The Anchor Lift: The anchor or inverted-T incision is used for patients who have severe sagging. This technique adds a horizontal cut along the breast fold to the lollipop procedure to remove excess tissue and skin.
