Vaginal Rejuvenation (Labiaplasty)
Many women experience enlarged or elongated labia that are a source of pain, discomfort and embarrassment. This condition affects women of all ages. Although it commonly occurs following childbirth, it can affect women without children, as well. Vaginal rejuvenation or labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the size and improve the appearance of the external genitalia.
Labiaplasty Procedure Overview
Vaginal rejuvenation or labiaplasty is a relatively minor procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. The labiaplasty procedure takes about an hour. You may consider vaginal rejuvenation if the contours of your vaginal structures have become altered or if you experience pain with sexual or other activity. Sometimes vaginal rejuvenation is performed if you have reduced sensation during intercourse as the result of childbirth.
There are different vaginal rejuvenation techniques. Depending on your concerns Dr. Cho will recommend the right one for you. If you are concerned by dark pigmentation as well as the size or shape of your labia, a trim labiaplasty technique may be used. If you are not concerned by pigmentation, you may opt for a wedge labiaplasty technique. Lasers may also be used during vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Dr. Cho will explain your options and make sure you understand potential labiaplasty outcomes after the procedures well in advance.
Many women combine vaginoplasty, “tightening” of the vagina, with labiaplasty.
Vaginal rejuvenation may be performed on the inner labia (labia minora), the outer labia (labia majora) or both. Dr. Cho will recommend the right procedure for your needs.
With vaginal rejuvenation there is the risk of bruising, bladder injury, hemorrhage and infection.
