Dermal Fillers Procedure Overview
Dermal fillers are very popular procedures with minimal downtime. They are incredibly versatile, and we use them to add support, add volume, or diminish lines or folds. Most adults in their thirties and beyond are good candidates for dermal fillers. Some people ask, "Isn't thirty too young?" In all honesty, studies show that the face starts losing bony and soft-tissue support in our twenties. This loss progresses at a faster rate as each decade passes. This is why it is generally easy to tell how many decades someone has, just by looking. It is also worth noting that the closer you are to your ideal appearance, the easier it is to restore and maintain.
What about younger adults in their twenties? Twenty-somethings are increasingly pursuing these treatments. We can use dermal fillers in this age group, even if they don't show any signs of aging, if they wish to enhance certain features (eg: lips, cheeks, chin, jawline).
Results are immediate, with minimal downtime. Discomfort, swelling, and bruising, if present, typically last a few days. Depending on the amount of work to do, the dermal filler procedure may be spaced over several appointments. Each treatment will build on the previous treatment. You will be instructed to avoid alcohol, workouts, heat and sun for 24 hours, and your side effects will typically disappear in a few days.
In our practice, we focus on natural results. We don't want anyone who hasn't met you before to be able to detect our work! In our opinion, the best way to maintain and restore your physical appearance is by analyzing what has been lost through the natural aging process. We generally believe that just the right amount in all the areas that you have experienced loss will give the best results. For this reason, we commonly recommended "full-face" plans, rather than focusing on an isolated area.
We also look to see whether you would benefit from enhancement of a particular feature. We look at the overall proportion of your features and how they relate to each other. We make customized recommendations based on what may benefit your particular constellation of features.
Dermal filler procedures work well with all other aesthetic procedures. They complement wrinkle-reducer, biostimulatory and energy-based procedures.
Biostimulatory fillers and fat grafting area also used to restore volume. In general, if a large amount of volume needs to be restored, our approach is to combine these modalities.
While millions of dermal-filler procedures have been safely performed, this is a medical procedure and there are risks. The most important ones to consider are 1) infection, especially if procedure is not performed under clean conditions, 2) hypersensitivity reaction that can result in redness, swelling, and/or nodule formation and 3) compromise of vascular system, which can rarely result in blood not being able to flow to the skin or, much more rarely, the eye.
On the phone, prior to your consultation, we will spend some time learning more about your health history, your previous aesthetic experiences, and your goals.
During your consultation, your Patient Experience Coordinator and Dr. Cho or Dr. Chiang will discuss your concerns in more depth. The doctor will assess your face and neck and suggest treatment options that would be most impactful for you. Many times, a multi-modal approach (see complementary procedures) will be presented as we like to share how we can achieve the best results. After discussing your options, your Patient Experience Coordinator will review quotes and coordinate with you the next steps.
