If you would like to enlarge your breasts or correct sagging breasts, breast augmentation can help. The procedure uses breast implants to improve your breast size and shape. A fat transfer with liposuction is another method used in breast augmentation. Your new breasts should last for years.
Breast Augmentation Procedure Overview
Breast augmentation is a customized surgery that can enlarge small breasts, improve the proportions of asymmetrical breasts and even correct some breast deformities, such as misshapen or tuberous breasts. The procedure is typically performed while patients are under general or sedation anesthesia, and the surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours.
Dr. Cho will help you make decisions about breast augmentation options based on your cosmetic goals, your personal preferences and your unique anatomy well in advance of surgery. When the day of your procedure arrives, you will feel comfortable and have realistic expectations of the outcome you can expect from your breast implants
All breast augmentation patients are required to refrain from using tobacco products, consuming alcohol and taking supplements and medications that can thin the blood in the weeks leading up to surgery. In addition to the size and type of implant you choose (saline, silicone or cohesive gel), a variety of other options exist to customize your breast augmentation results, including:
Breast implant shape (round or anatomical)
Implant projection (low, moderate, moderate plus, high profile or extra high profile)
Implant placement (over, under or partially under the chest muscles)
Incision location (in the breast folds, around the areolas or along the armpits)
Some people choose to combine breast augmentation with breast lift surgery for further enhancement. Women who also have a lot of stretch marks on their breasts but not quite ready for a breast lift may consider using BodyTite to strengthen the breast tissue to support the augmented breast and prolong the results. Dr. Cho may also offer the use of an internal bra to support the implant from below and further decrease the effects of gravity on the breasts and prolong the results.
Fat grating to the breast can also further shape the breasts to soften the transition between the chest and breast, enhance cleavage, decrease the bony ribs shadowing through and more. Some women will also consider adding body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck to consolidate the recovery and enhance their overall body shape outcomes.
Breast augmentation surgery uses saline, silicone or cohesive gel breast implants. Augmentation can also be performed by breast fat transfer via liposuction. There are limits to fat grafting based on your current breast size and availability of donor fat. Fat grafting becomes an option for those with sufficient donor fat and who desire a more modest increase in breast size. Fat grafting patients also find gratifying the secondary benefit of enhancing the shape of the region where the fat was removed.
Dr. Cho will meet with you to discuss the best option for you.
For those who choose to have a silicone implant for breast augmentation, the US FDA advises biannual MRI’s to look for possible “silent ruptures” that don’t cause symptoms. There are other risks as well, including infection, fluid buildup, painful scar tissue around the implant and skin wrinkling over the implant.
