It is better to treat acne before scarring occurs. Prescription medication and professional treatments can help clear your skin when at-home measures do not work.

Acne is a very common and often embarrassing problem. We think of it as a problem of adolescence, but a third of adult women also suffer from acne. The condition commonly occurs on the face, the back and the chest, areas of the body that contain the most oil glands. Acne can show up as superficial whiteheads and blackheads or deeper, often painful cysts.

The good news is that acne is extremely treatable. If you decide to seek professional help from Dr. Chiang, you will start off with a private consultation to determine the cause of your acne and the severity. She will then recommend a customized treatment. Treatment options range from topical treatments to oral prescription medications to extractions comma chemical peels and laser.

People may experience acne when the hair follicles become clogged. Acne occurs when bacteria, dead skin cells and oil form a plug within the hair follicle. Increased hormonal activity during puberty, menstruation or pregnancy increases oil production. There is also increasing evidence that what we eat including refined foods and dairy can increase outbreaks.

A consistent, gentle skincare routine, a healthy diet free from high glycemic food like candy, cookies and chips along with adequate hydration, exercise and sleep can improve acne. Over-the-counter skincare products that contain salicylic acid, benzol peroxide, retinoids or sulfur can help to prevent acne.

If acne is severe, it is best to have a professional guiding your treatments. The reason is that Dr. Chiang can prescribe effective treatments for acne, but treatments for acne scarring are much less effective. It is better to treat acne before scarring occurs. Prescription medication and professional treatments can help clear your skin when at-home measures do not work. Your treatment plan will be customized to address acne and your particular skin type. Professional treatment options for acne include extractions, chemical peels, topical retinoids, prescription medications and laser.

Non-Inflammatory Acne

Superficial blackheads and whiteheads respond well to treatments that are less invasive. Chemical peels and facials can exfoliate the skin to clear blockages and buildup of skin cells. The doctor typically recommends a topical retinoid that increase cell turnover and prevents blackheads or whiteheads.

Inflammatory Acne

For more severe forms of acne that are red bumps that range from superficial to deep, an oral medication that penetrates deeper will be more effective. Oral medications include birth control pills, spironolactone, antibiotics and isotretinoin (Accutane). Dr. Chiang will prescribe your acne treatment based on your unique concerns.
