What Causes Acne?

People may experience acne when the hair follicles become clogged. This gives bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil the opportunity to form a plug within the hair follicle. Increased hormonal activity during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy increases oil production and heightens the potential for an acne breakout.

There is also increasing evidence that what we eat can increase outbreaks, so we often recommend avoiding foods that can contribute to flare-ups, like refined foods and dairy.

Preventing Acne

A consistent gentle skincare routine; a healthy diet free from high glycemic food like candy, cookies, and chips; and adequate hydration, exercise, and sleep can significantly improve the presence of acne. Over-the-counter skincare products that contain salicylic acid, benzol peroxide, retinoids, or sulfur can also help to prevent acne breakouts.

Addressing the Issue Effectively

If your acne is severe, it is best to have a professional guide your treatments. Dr. Chiang can call on her extensive dermatological experience to prescribe effective treatments for acne, but treatments for acne scarring are much less effective. It is better to treat acne before scarring occurs. Prescription medication and professional treatments can help clear your skin when at-home measures do not work. Your treatment plan will be customized to address acne and your particular skin type, utilizing professional treatment options for acne that include extractions, chemical peels, topical retinoids, prescription medications, and laser resurfacing.

Non-Inflammatory Acne

Superficial blackheads and whiteheads respond well to less invasive treatments. Chemical peels and facials can exfoliate the skin to clear blockages and the buildup of skin cells. The doctor typically recommends a topical retinoid that increases cell turnover and prevents blackheads or whiteheads.

Inflammatory Acne

For more severe forms of acne that consist of red bumps ranging from superficial to deep, an oral medication that penetrates more deeply will be most effective. Oral medications include birth control pills, spironolactone, antibiotics, and isotretinoin (Accutane). Dr. Chiang will prescribe your acne treatment based on your unique concerns.
