Woman smiling, looking away, touching face

Are you thinking about dissolving your filler but not sure if it is the right decision? Many people get fillers to enhance their look, but if your injector isn’t an expert, the results can be a little (or a lot) off. Maybe your lips feel a little overdone, your cheeks look more sculpted than subtle, or you just don’t look like yourself. Whatever the case, knowing when and how to dissolve filler can help you keep a look that feels natural to you.

In this blog, we explore why you might want to consider dissolving your filler, how the process works, and what you can expect post-treatment—all from the perspective of a master injector.

Reasons You May Need to Dissolve Your Filler

Dr. Melissa Chiang, a board-certified dermatologist and expert injector at our MedSpa in Spring, TX, emphasizes that the need for filler correction can fall into two categories:

  • Obvious Overfilling: If it’s clear to you (or to others) that you have had filler, it may be time to consider making some adjustments.
  • Subtle Imbalances: Even if it’s not visible to others, you might feel something isn’t to your complete satisfaction. This can also warrant the need for a second opinion.

If you feel something is “off” after a filler treatment, you have options. For example, if you have had lip filler, and you notice your lips look a bit uneven or even have that dreaded “duck lips” appearance, dissolving some or all of the filler can address your concerns.

When It Might Be Time to Dissolve Your Filler

Knowing when to dissolve filler is key. Over time, people can become so used to their enhanced look that it becomes their new “normal.” This can lead to adding more filler, which may not always lead to the results you are seeking. If you find yourself wanting more fillers, but aren’t satisfied with the results, a different approach is likely needed. This is where an expert injector can make all the difference in knowing whether to add more filler, tweak other areas, or maybe dissolve your fillers.

How the Dissolving Process Works

Good news—if you are ready to remove some filler, there is a relatively quick solution. Using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, also known as Hylenex, an injector can break down hyaluronic acid fillers, which are the most commonly used today.

Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Topical Numbing: The area is typically numbed to minimize discomfort.
  2. Injection of Hyaluronidase: The enzyme is injected directly into the area where the filler is located. If the filler is easily visible, this process is usually straightforward. For deeper or less visible filler, ultrasound may be used to ensure precise targeting. Hyaluronidase works quickly, often breaking down the hyaluronic acid within 24 hours. The amount of enzyme needed varies depending on the volume and type of filler used in the area.
  3. Monitoring Results: Patients are often followed up with 24 hours later to assess the results of treatment.

Alternatives While You Wait

While waiting to refill, some patients may feel self-conscious about their appearance. In these cases, Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) can be used as a short-term solution. This treatment utilizes the patient’s own body’s resources for a subtle enhancement without the use of fillers.

Finding Your Perfect Balance

Dissolving fillers can be a game-changer if you feel dissatisfied with your results. One of the most important things is to consult with an experienced injector who has a strong understanding of facial aesthetics and filler.
