All About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is designed to improve the appearance of your upper or lower eyelid area when the aging process has caused your skin to lose elasticity and show signs of drooping or sagging. Blepharoplasty (the technical term for eyelid surgery) effectively reduces puffiness caused by fat pockets and can also enhance the overall shape of your eyelids for a more pleasing and attractive look.

  • Average Cost: $6,700 to $11,000
  • Typical Recovery Period: Two to Three Weeks
  • Discomfort Level: Mild
  • Anesthesia Options: Local, General, IV Sedation

What is the Difference Between Eyelid Surgery and Blepharoplasty?

Eyelid Surgery

This term covers any surgery done on your eyelids. It includes different procedures like blepharoplasty (to fix eyelid appearance), ptosis surgery (for droopy eyelids), repairs for eyelid problems like ectropion or entropion repair (to correct eyelid malpositions), and removing eyelid tumors.

Blepharoplasty

This surgery focuses on making your eyelids look better by dealing with too much skin, muscle, or fat. It can be done on both upper and lower eyelids and is often chosen to freshen up your look, improve vision if droopy eyelids are in the way, or make you look more awake.

What are Upper Blepharoplasty and Lower Blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are two types of eyelid surgeries aimed at improving the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids, respectively:

Upper Blepharoplasty

This procedure focuses on the upper eyelids. It typically involves the removal of excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper eyelids to address issues such as drooping eyelids or hooded appearance. Upper blepharoplasty can help rejuvenate the eyes, improve vision obstruction caused by excess skin, and create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty targets the lower eyelids. It usually involves removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle, and fat to reduce under-eye bags, puffiness, or wrinkles. Lower blepharoplasty can also address issues like sagging lower eyelids or hollowing under the eyes, resulting in a more rested and youthful appearance.

Bilateral Blepharoplasty

Both upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed separately or combined, depending on the patient's specific concerns and desired outcomes. It's essential to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Cho to determine the most suitable approach based on individual needs and goals.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

The aging process can impact your appearance in many ways, but excess fat can often be present due to simple genetics. Whether you have been frustrated by your appearance for a long time or are noticing changes as you get older, eyelid surgery can help you enjoy a more alert and open appearance and can work to restore a more youthful glow.

Our patients love eyelid surgery for the following reasons:

  • Eyelid surgery can make you look more youthful and refreshed.
  • Eyelid surgery may be performed under local anesthesia.
  • The recovery is generally easy after around a week of swelling and bruising.

The Eyelid Lift Experience

Upper eyelid surgery takes between 30 minutes and an hour to complete, while lower lid surgery generally takes a little longer. If a fat transfer is also performed, it will likely add about 30 minutes to an hour. You’ll be able to return home once the operation is complete.

For upper eyelid surgery, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the area before Dr. Cho marks the areas around your eye to determine the exact amount of skin that will be removed. Dr. Cho’s surgical technique will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

During the procedure, hidden incisions will be made along the upper eyelid crease, inside the lower eyelid, and/or along the lash line of the lower lids, ensuring that your post-surgical scarring is easily hidden. Dr. Cho will then remove excess skin along with a small amount of fat and muscle if necessary.

  • BOTOX Cosmetic is a trusted wrinkle relaxer that can help to rejuvenate the areas around your eyes.
  • Facial fat grafting is an advanced method that enables us to contour your facial appearance with exceptional levels of precision.
  • Laser skin resurfacing is a popular procedure to combine with your eyelid surgery as it helps to strengthen, thicken, and tighten the eyelids for a longer-lasting result.
  • Dermal fillers are injectable options that can help you enjoy your ideal facial appearance and an enhanced sense of facial harmony.

Do you Offer Alternative Procedures for Blepharoplasty?

While you can’t get an eyelid lift without a surgical procedure, alternative non-surgical procedures can improve your appearance. Dermal fillers can elevate the corners of your brows and pull up the lids. Fillers can also help create the appearance of a smooth surface to make bags below the eyes less obvious. Other injectables like BOTOX cosmetic can have a similar effect.

Your Eyelid Surgery Recovery

The initial recovery period following eyelid surgery is usually one to two weeks, and you will be instructed to refrain from wearing contact lenses for at least two to three weeks. Activity restrictions will also be in place for the first few weeks, during which time you can expect pain, bruising, and swelling to gradually resolve. You will use cold compresses and keep your head elevated to expedite your recovery and achieve the best possible results.

For many patients, the most serious bruising and swelling is during the first week of full recovery from eyelid surgery, although full recovery takes several months. You may have to schedule two weeks of downtime, depending on the extent of your surgery. If you have minimal fat removed, your healing can be as fast as a few days. For patients who have extensive muscle dissection or fat repositioning, recovery can take weeks or months.

Integrated Aesthetics will schedule follow-up visits so Dr. Cho and his team can check on your healing progress, and our team will always be available to you to ensure that you’re healing comfortably and to answer any questions that you might have. Complete eyelid surgery recovery takes a few months. When you achieve your final results, you will enjoy a more youthful and well-rested appearance.
