If you are unhappy about your weak chin or if you have poor lower face contours, chin augmentation can help improve your appearance. Dr. Cho will perform a chin augmentation with chin bone advancement or the insertion of a chin implant to enhance the proportions of your face.
Chin Augmentation Procedure Overview
Chin augmentation is used to correct a weak chin and poor lower face contours for both male and female patients. There are two surgery options to increase the chin projection: a chin implant and genioplasty that slides the chin bone forward. Genioplasty can also reduce an over-projected chin by sliding the chin bone backward.
Chin augmentation can improve the balance and proportion of your facial features and improve the definition of your lower face and neck. For an even better outcome, you can combine chin augmentation with neck liposuction to further improve face and neckline contours.
Your chin augmentation is likely to be performed while you are under sedation or general anesthesia. The incisions will be small and inconspicuously located under your chin or inside your lower lip. Dr. Cho may use screws, permanent sutures or a plate to hold your chin implant or chin bone in place during surgery. He may shave down the chin bone during the procedure.
Chin augmentation surgery will take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure and whether you are getting a chin implant or having your facial bones repositioned. Dr. Cho will recommend the right procedure for you based on your unique anatomy and your cosmetic goals.
Chin augmentation is designed to improve the balance and proportion of your facial features and enhance the definition of your lower face and neck. Chin surgery is often combined with neck liposuction or neck lift to improve the contours of your face and neckline even further.
You may have non-surgical options to strengthen your weak chin. Dermal fillers are sometimes used for minor chin augmentations. The results can be fast and dramatic, but the outcome is temporary. Some people try a dermal filler before chin augmentation surgery to get an idea of surgical results. Radiesse, Voluma and Restylane Defyne are common dermal fillers used for chin augmentation and shaping. Sculptra stimulates the body to produce natural collagen for 2-3 years.
Chin surgery is generally safe when it is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Cho. However, any surgery can carry the risk of hematoma, bruising, scarring and side effects from anesthesia. Other possible complications include infection, swelling and possible implant shifting. Dr. Cho will discuss these risks with you.
