Brazilian Butt Lift
You may not be happy with the curves and musculature of the butt you were born with. If you have tried to improve that area of your body with exercise without achieving the results you are looking for, a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) can help. The procedure, developed in Rio de Janeiro, uses fat from your own body to improve the contour of your butt. The procedure can enhance your appearance and boost your self-confidence.
Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure Overview
The buttock you were born with may or may not have the musculature or curves you desire. It may be difficult to improve upon certain areas with exercise alone, and in some cases, damage from an accident or certain health conditions may affect your appearance.
There are two primary augmentation options for increasing volume in the buttocks: fat transfer and implants. Fat transfer removes body fat from one region and re-injects it into the buttocks. This procedure is also called a Brazilian butt lift, but this name can be confused with similarly named exercise programs. Depending on the changes you desire and your available body fat, a fat transfer may be used alone or in conjunction with implants.
Augmentation with implants uses soft, solid silicone implants for an immediate and uniform increase in buttock volume. Unlike fat transfers, where survival of transferred fat varies and may require touchups, implants maintain their volume and don’t need follow up adjustments. Buttock, or gluteal, implants are designed to change your contours, enhancing your appearance and self-confidence.
If you decide on the Brazilian Butt Lift, during the liposuction portion of the procedure fat will be removed from another part of your body. Dr. Cho will mark your skin to delineate the areas where fat will be harvested and added. The fat is processed and it is injected into tissue below the surface of the skin at targeted areas on your buttocks. The injections will be placed to give you more curves. Fat grafting as an approach to buttock augmentation has the added benefit of further enhancing the body by reducing the fatty tissue layer in selected areas that can create even more contrast with the buttock. For example removing fat from the lower back, waist and abdomen and adding this to the buttock will create an enhanced contrast with buttock than simply adding implants to the buttock. If you decide on butt augmentation with implants, Dr. Cho will place soft, solid silicone implants for an immediate and uniform increase in buttock volume.
If you are considering a tummy tuck as well as a Brazilian Butt Lift, it can be cost effective to have both procedures done at the same time. When these procedures are combined with breast augmentation it is called a Mommy Makeover. Recovery becomes more challenging due to positioning requirements after surgery, so these procedures are often staged.
Often cellulite may also be present in the buttocks. Combining the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure with cellulite reducing procedures such as subcission, Profound RF, BodyTite and others may further enhance the buttock aesthetics.
For many patients, reducing the volume around the back, waist and abdomen (e.g. liposuction with or without a tummy tuck) can make the appearance of the buttock seem larger by virtue of creating more contrast. This may be enough for patients who feel they want to limit how much surgery they have in one setting. A non-surgical alternative for buttock augmentation is with Sculptra or Radiesse, although much smaller augmentations are achieved with these procedures.
Some patients find that they have dents or lumps in their buttocks after surgery. In that case, revision surgery may be necessary to correct the problem. Patients face a lower risk of complications if fat injections are delivered just beneath the skin. There is also a risk of an embolism if the injected fat enters the vein.
