Your IPL Photofacial

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a versatile treatment that can be used to address a wide range of skin conditions. Dermatologists use it as a photo rejuvenation technique to decrease brown spots from sun damage and minimize rosacea and broken capillaries.

After just one use, you’ll notice significant improvements in the complexion and clarity of your skin, with minimal downtime. Our Lumecca device operates using photothermolysis, which provides a photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment.

Your Consultation

Your initial consultation will see you meeting with Dr. Cho and Dr. Chiang so they can learn more about your personal goals and explore the various ways we can help you make them a reality. We focus heavily on patient education, and it’s our goal to ensure that you feel as though you’ve explored all of your options when visiting our practice.

You’ll also receive pre-treatment instructions to explain what to avoid in the days or weeks prior to your treatment, in addition to a clear understanding as to what you can expect on the day of your treatment. We’ll answer any questions you might have, and our team will be available to you at all times during your journey with us.

We'll also work with you to explore a number of complementary procedures that can be performed alongside your IPL Photofacial treatment. These include:

The Day of Your IPL Photofacial Treatment

On the day of your Intense Pulsed Light treatment, your aesthetician will clean your skin and apply a cooling gel. You and your aesthetician will both wear protective eyewear during the procedure.

The IPL device will glide and move against your skin, and light pulses will be emitted by the press of a button. During treatment, there will be a bright flash of light along with a light elastic sensation with each pulse.

IPL treatment generally lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. After your treatment, the gel is removed and the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Then a soothing serum followed by a physical sunscreen is applied to keep your skin protected.

Why Choose Intense Pulsed Light?

  • IPL is effective in treating age spots, freckles, and sunspots.
  • This procedure can reduce redness caused by rosacea and broken capillaries.
  • IPL carries a lower risk than some other similar procedures.
  • Your recovery time will be minimal.
  • IPL works best on light skin.

After Your IPL Photofacial

You should be able to return to work and your regular activities immediately after IPL treatment. Your skin may be swollen and red for a few to several hours. Ice packs or a cool washcloth to the treated area can ease your discomfort. Pigmented spots or “coffee grounds” will appear on your skin one to seven days after the IPL treatment before fading away several days or a week later.

Your skin may feel sunburned or sensitive for a couple of days following the treatment. You will need to avoid sun exposure for seven 10 days and use sunscreen daily to protect the treatment area. You may need several IPL treatments spaced three to four weeks apart for optimal results. Our office will work with you to set up these appointments in a way that works with your personal schedule.

Are there any risks?

What else should I know?

  • A topical anesthetic cream is needed to numb the pain of the procedure.
  • It can be less effective at hair removal than lasers.

Are there any risks?

With IPL, there is a risk of blistering, bruising, a change in skin color, and infection. Patients with a history of cold sores should refer to their provider for a prophylactic course of antiviral medication to prevent flares. It is recommended that you see an experienced professional for your IPL treatment.
