PRF therapy is a less invasive, non-surgical alternative treatment for hair loss than FUE and FUT, which are surgical options. It is considered to be safe and relatively inexpensive. The main objective of PRF therapy is to slow or halt hair loss. During PRF therapy for hair loss, platelets are extracted from your own blood. The platelet-rich fibrin is then injected into the areas of your scalp that show thinning hair.

How Does PRF Hair Restoration Work?

The platelets in your blood contain signaling agents for cells that orchestrate healing systems and tissue rejuvenation. By harnessing these regenerative powers, we can help you enjoy exciting results, including hair restoration. A simple blood draw enables us to extract a sufficient amount of blood, which is then run through a special centrifuge. This separates out the PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), which is then purified and prepared for injection.

When injected into follicles that have fallen dormant and stopped producing hair, the PRF “wakes” these sleepy follicles up and kick-starts their hair growth abilities. PRF therapy has not yet been approved by the FDA for hair loss, but research has shown that the treatment is effective for age-related hair loss and alopecia.

What to Expect During PRF Hair Restoration

The PRF treatment session begins with drawing a small amount of blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from other blood components. The plasma in your blood is the liquid that carries platelets and your white and red blood cells. The platelets are processed to concentrate the growth factors they contain, at which point the PRF is then injected into the treatment areas on your scalp to slow the loss of hair.

PRF increases the blood flow to your hair follicles, lengthens the active phase of your hair cycle to promote new growth, and stimulates new hair follicles to grow thick, healthy, natural hair in the treatment area. Doctors who perform PRF therapy report that the treatment stimulates hair follicles and slows the rate of hair loss, and in some cases, it can even generate the growth of totally new hair.

After Your PRF Hair Restoration Treatment

There is no downtime after the non-surgical hair restoration. You may experience mild pain and redness along with some discomfort or minor swelling for a few days, but we’ll give you everything you need to manage your discomfort.

You will need repeated treatments to see results. If the treatment works, you will see the results within around four months. Dr. Chiang may schedule you for an injection every for to six weeks for up to six months, with follow-up visits once every three or four months for up to two years.
