How CoolSculpting Works for You

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive body-slimming procedure that requires no needles, incisions, or surgery.

Using a temperature-controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis, CoolSculpting® penetrates beneath your skin to freeze and eliminate fat cells.

Your aesthetician will use the device to penetrate and  freeze the intended tissue to eliminate fat cells in a targeted area during a treatment session that takes between one and three hours to complete, depending on the size and the number of areas that are being treated. The treatment works best for patients who are at a stable weight, follow a consistent diet, and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Creating Your CoolSculpting Results

During your treatment for CoolSculpting in Spring, TX, you are free to read, work, listen to music, or watch TV. For comfort, you will be seated at an incline position while your aesthetician applies the gel liner and CoolSculpting applicator to the treatment area. Patients have reported minimal to no discomfort associated with the treatment. As the applicator chills itself to the preset temperature, mild burning or stinging sensations can be experienced in the first five to 10 minutes.

Once the treatment is complete in an area, the applicator is then removed along with the gel liner, followed by a two- to three-minute massage to the area. The massage is performed with our Z-wave device to increase blood circulation, warm the tissue back to normal, and optimize fat cell reduction for an ideal, smooth contour. Because CoolSculpting only treats small areas at a time, we use the DualSculpting method to cut the treatment time in half.

CoolSculpting Complementary Procedures

Some people opt to include cellulite and/or skin tightening treatments with their CoolSculpting procedure. An integrated approach can be determined based on your goals and expectations. We’ll help you explore the various body contouring options that can complement your results from CoolSculpting in Spring, TX.

Additional procedures that can be offered alongside CoolSculpting include:

Dr. Cho’s Approach to Body Contouring

Dr. Cho’s approaches body contouring by first listening to the patient’s goals during their consultation and assessment. He prefers to segment the patient’s concerns into three different components that, when addressed, can help achieve their goals.

Shrink

As we get older, our tissues lose collagen and elasticity. We offer many options to help with this non-surgically. We use energy-based devices to stimulate collagen and elastin production, creating a nice overall change in patients that show mild to moderate degrees of skin laxity. On the surgical side, physically removing excess skin is often the strongest option. This can be completed with a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, breast lift, etc. For stronger results, we offer procedures like BodyTite, which is more minimally invasive and reduces excess fullness, while also addressing skin elasticity and sagging.

Tighten

The second component of body contouring involves fat. Volume reduction needs to be done in an artful way that enhances the patient’s overall shape or figure. We have some non-surgical options for this, such as CoolSculpting, EmSculpt, and Vanquish. These are all devices that help target fat but can also address some additional body contouring concerns. When a more dramatic change is desired, or if Dr. Cho feels that the patient will not be happy with an incremental approach, we shift our approach to options such as BodyTite. BodyTite helps to reduce fat and also tightens the skin.

Tone

The third component of body contouring involves muscle. With emerging technology, we can now focus on building muscle, which is a third tissue layer that can really help to enhance a patient’s results. We use devices like EmSculpt, which can stimulate intense muscle contractions and build new muscle fibers that enhance the shape and tone of the body. A tummy tuck or other surgical procedure can physically tighten the muscle units in a more anatomical position, allowing them to function more efficiently. Sometimes we even combine this approach with our non-surgical options to realign the muscles in a more anatomic position while also building muscle with EmSculpt.

Is There a Recovery Period after CoolSculpting?

You may experience swelling or discomfort after CoolSculpting, which can be helped by wearing a compression garment. You are likely to feel nerve twinges in the treatment area as the nerves regenerate following your treatment, and it’s common to feel itchy in the treatment area for about one to two weeks.

Any numbness you have will typically resolve within three to four weeks, and you will be instructed to exercise, drink plenty of water, and eat a healthy diet. A single CoolSculpting treatment can lead up to a 20 percent reduction in body fat in the treated area.

Does CoolSculpting really work?

CoolSculpting has many benefits over other fat removal procedures, like liposuction. It’s non-surgical, non-invasive, and requires no recovery time. Following a procedure, injured fat cells may take four to six months to leave the body as Cryolipolysis reduces fat in the treatment area by up to 20 percent on average.

Are there areas of fat that are more resistant to CoolSculpting than other areas?

Fat in the body is unique to each person, but CoolSculpting has been shown to have excellent results. There are no particular areas of fat that are more resistant than other areas.

Do most people have a positive outcome to CoolSculpting on the abdomen?

CoolSculpting and other forms of cryolipolysis have a high success and satisfaction rate. However, people should note that the effects of the treatment only apply to the targeted areas. It is not a weight loss procedure. It also does not tighten the skin. Moreover, the procedure doesn’t work for everyone.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

  • You’re near your target weight
  • You’re looking to get rid of stubborn fat areas
  • You are generally healthy
  • You are not pregnant or thinking about pregnancy
  • You have enough fat to treat
  • You are not interested in liposuction

Do you offer alternative treatments?

Non-surgical alternative treatment options include BTL Exilis, which uses a combination approach of radiofrequency and ultrasound energy. The BodyTite radiofrequency treatment tightens sagging skin and is usually paired with liposuction for fat removal. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat permanently. At Integrated Aesthetics, we offer several body contouring procedures that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals and will work with you to craft a customized treatment plan that is bespoke to your needs.

What else do I need to know?

  • You might need an additional two or more treatments, up to four weeks apart, depending on your baseline.
  • Older patients with less skin elasticity may see sagging skin after losing fat.
  • Indentations or frostbite can occur if the procedure is done incorrectly.

Does CoolSculpting work on areas of fat on the stomach after a tummy tuck?

CoolSculpting is a great way to help remove a small bulge after liposuction. However, if you have recently had surgery such as a Tummy Tuck, we recommend you consult with Dr. Cho as to the length of time that you should wait before doing CoolSculpting.

Does CoolSculpting tighten loose skin?

In addition to fat layer reduction, CoolSculpting can noticeably reduce skin laxity. The mechanism by which CoolSculpting induces skin tightening is not known. The improved appearance in the skin may not actually be skin tightening but perhaps dermal thickening, resulting in an improved appearance to thin, crepey skin. We recommend EmTone and Exilis for skin tightening and CoolSculpting for stubborn fat reduction.

What are the side effects? Is it safe?

Side effects such as swelling, bruising, numbness, tingling, itching, and redness can last a few days to several weeks. There is a small risk of PAH, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the fat cells expand in response to the extreme cold. Patients who have CoolSculpting procedures in FDA-approved treatment areas have less risk.

How long is each session? How many sessions do I need?

Your CoolSculpting treatment will take one to three hours, depending on the size and the number of areas that are being treated. While every patient is different, most patients benefit from one to three sessions for each area of concern. We recommend that patients wait at least four weeks before re-treating any area.

What happens to the fat after the session?

Over time, your fat cells shrink and are naturally metabolized by the liver. They are then naturally eliminated by your body. The painless process means it is perfect for those unable to shift those last stubborn pockets of fat from their body.

The fat cells that are destroyed through CoolSculpting are eliminated and will not return to the body. However, new fat cells can be generated, and the remaining fat cells can still swell with subsequent weight gain.

When should I see the results?

When you are treated, the fat cells in the target area are destroyed, and your lymphatic system naturally removes the cells from the body. This means that the fat will be removed slowly, so you can expect to see the results one to three months after your treatment.
