LARGE BREASTS

Learn your treatment options.

While the size and shape of your breasts is likely to be the result of your genetic predisposition, weight gain can increase breast size. A weight gain can lead to an increase in breast tissue volume.

OVERVIEW

Large breasts are mainly determined by genetics and they can interfere with your quality of life. Sometimes your breasts increase in size as the result of weight gain, pregnancy or a breast augmentation procedure. If you have large breasts, they may begin to sag as the result of extra breast tissue pulling the breasts downward. A breast reduction can address medical concerns such as back, neck and shoulder pain. The procedure can make your breasts more proportionate to your body.

Women who have only minor sagging may benefit from a radio frequency assisted breast lift which is less invasive than surgery. Those who have had their breasts enlarged through a breast augmentation procedure may want to refine the results of the surgery or restore their appearance to presurgical proportions by removing implants.

A candidate for breast reduction may be bothered by skin irritation in the breast crease. Breast reduction can make you more comfortable when you exercise and help you get a better night’s sleep. Dr. Cho at Integrated Aesthetics will recommend a treatment option to help you achieve your goals.

CAUSES

While the size and shape of your breasts is likely to be the result of your genetic predisposition, weight gain can increase breast size. A weight gain can lead to an increase in breast tissue volume. Pregnant women may also experience increased breast size to prepare for breast feeding. Sometimes the breast remains larger after pregnancy.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

The objective of breast reduction surgery is to remove excess fat, tissue and skin to relieve pain and discomfort and produce a breast size that is in proportion to the rest of your body. A breast reduction is not recommended for patients who are under the age of 18 or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Breast reduction surgery is often performed with a breast lift to improve sagging. Patients generally take a week or two off from work, and final results are visible after a few weeks or months.

BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

There are three different breast reduction surgical techniques that can remove excess fatty breast tissue to produce the desired result.

  1. The Donut Incision: If you need a minor breast reduction Dr. Cho may recommend the donut or periareolar incision. With this technique the nipple is repositioned when excess tissue is removed.
  2. The Lollipop Incision: The vertical or lollipop incision is used for moderate breast size concerns. The donut incision which is made around the areola is combined with an additional incision from the areola to the breast fold to remove tissue and skin.
  3. The Anchor Incision: The anchor or inverted-T incision is used for patients who want a breast reduction and also have severe sagging. This technique adds a horizontal cut along the breast fold to the lollipop procedure to remove excess tissue and skin.
