What are Eye Bags?

Mild swelling under the eye can develop as we age, creating unattractive “eye bags.” The condition can also be the result of genetics. Eye bags are very common, and fortunately there are treatments that can provide good results. When home remedies and lifestyle changes do not help, a visit to the doctor at Integrated Aesthetics can set you on a path to improve your eye bags. Eyelid surgery is the only effective way to reduce or eliminate eye bags permanently, but there are other less invasive procedures that may help. During your initial consultation at Integrated Aesthetics, the doctor will make recommendations to address your concerns and reach your goals, whether it is a simple filler, a skin tightening procedure or surgery.

What Causes Eye Bags?

If your eye bags are caused by genetics they may appear at a very young age. For others, aging is the primary culprit. The problem arises when the muscles around the eye gradually weaken and fat under the eyes pushes forward to make the lower lids appear puffy. Older skin becomes lax and wrinkled as a result of the natural aging process.

To make matters worse, excess fluid can collect in the space below your eyes to make your lower lids appear even more swollen. Sometimes smoking, allergies and not getting enough sleep can cause fluid retention under your eyes to make your eye bags more prominent. Salty food can also cause fluid retention.

Preventing Eye Bags

Leading a healthy lifestyle can help prevent eye bags from developing to some degree. Do not smoke, get enough sleep and avoid salty foods that can cause fluid retention under your eyes.

Treatment Options for Eye Bags

You may want to try a noninvasive treatment option before you schedule surgery. Nonsurgical options include injectable fillers, laser resurfacing and chemical peels.

  • Injectable fillers use ingredients like hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance, in the area under your eye near your cheek to create the look of a smooth transition. The treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure under a local anesthetic, and the results will last from 6-12 months. Fillers are often combined with skin tightening procedures like laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels and microneedling.
  • Laser resurfacing uses a laser to stimulate collagen growth and remove the surface layers of wrinkled skin under your eye. After the laser resurfacing procedure you will enjoy firmer skin. The results of laser resurfacing can last for years, depending on how much sun exposure you have had and your skin type.
  • Chemical peels can treat the wrinkles under your eyes by removing the top layers of your skin. A chemical peel is performed in the office where the doctor will use a chemical solution that will dissolve your old skin cells and reveal tighter skin underneath. As with laser resurfacing, the results of a chemical peel can last for years depending on your skin type and sun damage.
  • An eyelid lift, technically called a blepharoplasty, is a surgical outpatient procedure.
  • A lower eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is a permanent solution to remove eye bags. The doctor will adjust the fat of your lower eye area, and then tighten the muscle and skin in order to create a smooth appearance. Some doctors combine laser resurfacing with an eyelid lift.
