Understanding the Double Chin

A “double chin,” technically known as submental fat, is a common condition that can distort your profile and lower your self-esteem. This condition often occurs when you gain weight, but losing weight is not likely to solve the problem. Genetic predisposition and aging play a role in developing a double chin, which may also be the result of side effects from medication or a medical condition. Whatever the cause of your submental fullness may be, Dr. Young Cho is here to help. At Integrated Aesthetics, we offer a number of both surgical and non-surgical solutions to issues like a double chin, and we’ll work closely with you to find the solution that’s right for you. How We Can Help Treat Your Double Chin

Fortunately, there are many options to treat a double chin, including non-surgical and surgical procedures. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from the targeted area, and less invasive treatments such as CoolSculpting and/or laser and radiofrequency methods options can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Before recommending a treatment option, Dr. Cho at Integrated Aesthetics will review your medical history to see if your double chin is caused by a medical concern. Dr. Cho will make a treatment recommendation based on your particular condition, concerns, and goals.

What Causes a Double Chin?

Genetic predisposition plays a strong role in the development of a double chin. You may also form a double chin as a result of weight gain or skin laxity due to the normal aging process. The structure of your chin and neck can also affect your chances of developing a double chin.

Sometimes a double chin is a side effect of medication, or it can indicate a medical concern, such as issues with your thyroid or kidneys. Elevated cortisol levels resulting in Cushing’s Syndrome can also cause a double chin. Hypothyroidism, where your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, may be a cause. If you notice the sudden appearance of a double chin, it might be the result of inflammation of the salivary gland.

Treatment Options for Resolving a Double Chin

Kybella and CoolSculpting

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable prescription medication that can dissolve fat and define your chin and neck contour. A Kybella treatment lasts just 15 to 20 minutes, but you are likely to require multiple injections to see permanent results. CoolSculpting is another commonly used nonsurgical procedure that targets unwanted fat. CoolSculpting freezes fat under your chin. The fat cells die off and are eliminated naturally by the body.

Other Noninvasive Solutions to Treat a Double Chin

Noninvasive radiofrequency and laser energy can be used without liposuction or other surgical procedures for people who have a minimal double chin related to aging. These techniques promote collagen production for tighter skin, better texture, and a more even skin tone. Ultrasound and pulsed light combined with radiofrequency can also treat a double chin.

AccuTite/FaceTite

AccuTite & FaceTite  are outpatient treatments performed with local anesthesia. These procedures use RFAL, or radiofrequency-assisted liposuction. This unique technology requires only a tiny incision to liquefy and remove unwanted fat cells. AccuTite and FaceTite also stimulate collagen production for a firmer, more sculpted and defined jawline that lasts for the long term.

Lower Face and Neck Lift

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that can treat your double chin if it is caused by loose and excess skin along with weakened muscles. A neck lift is commonly performed as a part of a lower face lift in order to address jowls, a double chin, and a sagging neckline. The procedure can be combined with liposuction and a chin implant to further define the jawline.

Liposuction

Liposuction removes fat surgically from a targeted area and can create dramatic results. There are various types of liposuction, including laser-assisted liposuction, which removes unwanted fat below your chin while tightening your skin to improve the contour of your chin and neck. Radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL) also removes fat and tightens the skin while improving skin elasticity. RFAL heats up the fatty issue, which makes it easier to extract.

MyEllevate

MyEllevate firms and tightens the jawline and chin with the use of unique sutures that are designed for long term results. These sutures are inserted into the tissue around your jawline to effectively reposition and lift the tissues. At the same time, MyEllevate boosts natural collagen production for long-lasting improvements over time. The result is a more sculpted, defined and contoured jawline.
