Relieving Your Tired Look

Darkness around the eyes can make you look tired, and it is a common cause of concern.  There is no one-size-fits-all answer because there are many reasons for dark circles. Darkness can be caused by vascularity, genetic pigmentation, postinflammatory pigmentation, or a dermatological condition, shadowing from skin laxity or volume loss, or a combination of factors.

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Chiang will start by evaluating the cause of the darkness so that she can create a treatment plan that will make you look and feel better. Treatments will vary depending on the cause and severity. For pigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation (where the original cause of pigmentation has been addressed), treatment options include sun protection, bleaching agents, and chemical peels.

The Causes of Dark Circles

Vascularity

The eyelid skin is very thin. If the skin is pale, the vasculature sitting less than a millimeter under the skin can show through, giving the skin a pink, blue, or purplish tone.

Pigmentation

In darker skin types, especially people of South Asian descent, the eyelid skin can be darker due to excess melanin.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Pigmentation can also accumulate due to inflammation of the eyelid skin from various dermatologic conditions, including allergy and contact dermatitis.

A Combination of Factors

A patient may exhibit several of the above reasons for dark circles around the eyes.

Preventing Dark Circles

Vigorously protecting your skin from the sun will help to lessen some causes of dark circles, including post-inflammatory pigmentation, shadowing from volume loss, and increasing vascularity due to thinning skin. When you visit us to address your dark circles, we’ll educate you on the various methods by which you can protect your skin and enjoy a youthful look.

Treating the Issue Effectively

The treatment options that Dr. Chiang suggests will vary depending on the cause and severity. We pride ourselves on working closely with each of our patients, as we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to issues like dark circles under the eyes.

For pigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation (where the original cause of pigmentation has been addressed), treatment options include sun protection, bleaching agents, and chemical peels. If the cause is due to shadowing, modalities that address volume deficiency are more effective.

Here at Integrated Aesthetics, we’re excited to offer more than 60 surgical and non-surgical treatment options. We’ll help you explore the various choices that are available to you, educating you on the various ways we can address your issues and restore your ideal look.
